Dear Friends of Westwood Lodge:

As many of you know, Westwood Lodge is no longer providing psychiatric services as of August 31, 2017. A smooth transition for patients and their families was our top priority, and we diligently ensured that all patients were set up with appropriate care at other nearby facilities. We are also pleased to report that the majority of staff employed at Westwood Lodge has transitioned into roles at other Arbour Health System (AHS) hospitals and outpatient treatment centers.

For many decades, Westwood Lodge has been privileged to provide behavioral health services to residents of the Commonwealth — children, adolescents and adults seeking specialized treatment during some of the most difficult periods of their lives. Our trained, compassionate staff has been committed to delivering quality patient care with dignity and respect, with the goal of helping our patients return to their communities as healthier individuals. I am extremely proud of the tireless sacrifices of those who worked every day, often under challenging circumstances, to positively impact our patients’ lives.

It is in this spirit that I would like to reflect on the many accomplishments of Westwood Lodge and its staff which greatly outweigh a few unfortunate, isolated events. Over just the past decade, Westwood and its dedicated team of physicians, nurses, mental health technicians and support staff provided compassionate, specialized behavioral health treatments and positively impacted the lives of more than 40,000 patients during 500,000 patient treatment days. Westwood maintained a laudable record of positive recognition on third-party measured, evidence-based clinical performance metrics including The Joint Commission’s Hospital-Based Inpatient Psychiatric Services and the Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services’ Inpatient Psychiatric Facility Quality Reporting System. In recent years, Westwood Lodge routinely outperformed the national and Massachusetts averages for the vast majority of measured criteria for patient care. In addition to robust performance on industry clinical metrics, Westwood Lodge patients regularly reported high satisfaction with the care they received based on the results of thousands of anonymous voluntary surveys.

These are just some of the many important accomplishments achieved by Westwood Lodge and its staff, which have directly and positively influenced thousands of lives. I believe this will be its lasting legacy and one that we can proudly embrace. The entire AHS leadership team takes seriously our sacrosanct responsibilities to our patients and their families, our staff and the entire Massachusetts community.

Arbour Health System’s primary focus will always be to provide high-quality care to patients and their families across our network of hospitals in the Commonwealth. The closure of psychiatric services at Westwood Lodge does not impact any other AHS hospital site or outpatient center. We look forward to the opportunity to continue serving our community.

Sincerely,
Dania O’Connor
