Arbour SeniorCare today announced that Michael LaFerney, PhD, RN, PMHCNS, BC, was selected by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to receive the 2017 Certified Nurse Award. The Certified Nurse Award is given annually to approximately a dozen nurses across the country who demonstrated professionalism, leadership, and commitment to excellence in patient care.

LaFerney is a Psychiatric Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist at Arbour SeniorCare where he has provided care to elderly patients with behavioral and mental health disorders since 2002. In addition, LaFerney is an adjunct professor at Quincy College where he teaches psychology.

Before joining Arbour SeniorCare, LaFerney served as the Executive Administrator of Nursing Services at the Bridgewater State Hospital (Correctional Medical Services). With over 25 years of experience, LaFerney has held clinical and senior leadership positions at local mental health facilities including Bridgewater State Hospital, Morton Hospital, St. Joseph Center for Psychiatric Services, Quincy Hospital, Fuller Memorial Hospital, and Taunton State Hospital.

He has published numerous articles focusing on the mental health needs of older adults in publications such as Current Psychiatry, Advance for Nurses, Nurse Recruiter Magazine and Reflections on Nursing Leadership. LaFerney also served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1983-1996 as a psychiatric nurse.

Currently a resident of Lakeville, Massachusetts he is a graduate of San Antonio College’s nursing program. LaFerney also earned a Bachelor of Science in in Liberal Studies from from SUNY Albany, a Master of Arts in Counseling/Psychology from Ball State University, a PhD in Psychology from Universidad Central de Nicaragua, and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Counseling from Bridgewater State College. He also received an Online Certificate in Management and Business Administration from AmbaiU. Specializing in hypnotherapy and transformation meditation, LaFerney holds an Advanced Hypnotherapy Certificate from the American Institute of Hypnotherapy and a Certificate of Foundations of Hypnosis from the Hypnosis Motivation Institute, and is a member of the American Alliance of Hypnotists.
